Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Before we visited Costa Rica, we mostly had heard things about Santa Teresa, and when we arrived to Puerto Viejo, we were slightly shocked that we hadn’t heard more about this place. Puerto Viejo that is located on the Caribbean coast, is a very lively beach town with a great atmosphere and a lot of beautiful beaches to discover. The nightlife in combination with the slow pace and beautiful nature makes it one of the top destinations to visit in Costa Rica.

Must-Do Activities in Puerto Viejo:

• Punta Uva: One of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Calm waters, perfect for swimming and kayaking. You can get there easily from Puerto Viejo town by bike or taxi in about 10 minutes.
• Cahuita National Park: Donation-based national park where you can enter for free, but donations helps to support the park and the work they do. You can hike trails along the beach, spot wildlife, and end up at some truly beautiful beaches.
• Rent a Bike and Explore: The coastline is best seen on two wheels. Ride from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo for a beach-hopping day.
• Experience the Nightlife: Small bars with big energy. Salsa nights, live music, and bonfires on the beach. Just walk around town to find the vibe that suits you best.
• Try Caribbean Food: Make sure to try the local dishes, which are a big part of Puerto Viejo’s culture.

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is one of the most famous places in Costa Rica, and a lot of travelers go here mostly for the surf. However, you can also find a lot of yoga and wellness, as well as cute boutique shops to explore. The sunsets here are truly amazing, and there is a welcoming, relaxed vibe.

Top Things to Do in Santa Teresa:

• Surf Playa Santa Teresa & Playa Hermosa: Both beaches have consistent waves, perfect for surfers of all levels. There are plenty of surf schools where you can rent boards and take lessons without spending a lot. Surfing is one of the top Costa Rica must-do activities here. Even if you don’t surf, it can be nice watching the surfers in action from the beach.
• Visit the Town and Boutique Shops: Santa Teresa’s town has a good mix of artisan markets, small shops, and cafes. You can find handmade jewelry, beachwear, and local crafts. It’s a nice place to explore, grab a coffee or smoothie, and check out what’s around.
• Sunset Sessions: Every evening, the beach fills up with people enjoying live music, fire dancers, or just watching the sunset.
• Yoga and Wellness: There are many yoga studios offering drop-in classes. Whether you’re new to yoga or experienced, it’s an easy way to relax and take a break from sightseeing.

Overall, it’s a very beautiful destination and a great spot to slow down and enjoy some fresh mountain air.

• Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve: Home to countless species of flora and wildlife. You don’t need a guide, but having one helps you spot more wildlife as they know the hidden spots where you might see monkeys, sloths, or even a quetzal.
• Hanging Bridges and Zip Line Tours: Canopy walks and zip lines at top spots like Selvatura Park and Treetopia Park. Both have stunning hanging bridge trails. Selvatura is known for its forest views, while Treetopia has the longest suspension bridge in Costa Rica. You can easily get there by shuttle or a short taxi ride from Santa Elena. Unforgettable Activities in La Fortuna:

• La Fortuna Waterfall: A hike that leads you to a waterfall surrounded by jungle. You can swim in the cool pool or relax on the rocks and just enjoy the view. The way back up is a bit of a climb but definitely worth it for the view alone.
• Arenal Volcano National Park & Volcan Chato: You can hike the old lava trails and enjoy the views of the massive volcano. It’s active but resting, so hiking all the way to the top is not allowed.
• Hot Springs: Relax in naturally heated pools, one of the most iconic Costa Rica must-do activities. For a budget option, check out Río Chollín (also called Tabacóncito), a free hot spring near the main road. It’s popular with locals, has a natural feel, and won’t cost you a thing.

Uvita

Uvita, located on the southern Pacific coast, is known for the iconic Whale’s Tail sandbar, as well as its marine life, especially during whale-watching season. The Whale’s Tail sandbar is a unique sight and is located in Marino Ballena Park, where you can walk the sandbar and find boat tours for dolphins and whale watching. The town itself is quiet with a few cafes. There are also nearby waterfalls to explore, with jungle all around.

What to Do:

• Marino Ballena National Park: At low tide, the sandbar looks like a whale’s tail which gives a unique view. The park is also a hotspot for dolphins and whales.
• Whale Watching Tours: The best time to see humpback whales is August to October and December to March. Whale watching is definitely one of the unforgettable Costa Rica must-do activities. Tours from Uvita offer a close-up view of these amazing animals.
• Nauyaca Waterfall: A short drive from town, this double waterfall is great for swimming and cliff jumping. Natural pools at the base are perfect for cooling off in a peaceful jungle setting.

Can’t-Miss Activities in Montezuma:

• Montezuma Waterfalls: A series of three waterfalls with a hike through the jungle, with the first one popular for cliff jumping. Once there, you can swim in the natural pools and relax by the water. It’s a nice stop that’s worth the effort.
• Playa Grande: A long, often quiet beach that’s perfect for early morning walks and catching some waves. Surfers love it for the consistent waves, but there’s also plenty of room to relax without the crowds. A great spot to enjoy nature and watch the sunrise in peace.

• Playa Tamarindo: Playa Tamarindo is great for surf, especially beginners, with gentle, easy waves. With plenty of surf schools and board rentals, you can easily take a lesson or explore on your own. The long, wide beach is also perfect for relaxing walks or enjoying sunsets.
• Sunset Catamaran Cruise: Experience a catamaran tour with snorkeling, snacks, drinks, and music. Super nice way to relax while also enjoy the coastal views and sunsets.
• Tamarindo Nightlife: From beach bars to late-night clubs, it’s a party town if you want it to be.
• Las Baulas National Marine Park: Visit Playa Grande from October to March to see leatherback turtles nest, a rare and unforgettable event.
• Tamarindo Estuary Kayak Tour: Paddle through peaceful mangroves while spotting wildlife like birds, crocodiles, and monkeys along the way.
